Dr. Ellicott was a conservative Bible scholar, as his book introductions clearly show. Most of the books are more expository than technical, as Ellicott sought explanations for “English readers”. A few of the Old Testament books take a closer look at the Septuagint Greek, but overall the commentary explains the text from an English perspective, occasionally clarifying the underlying Hebrew or Greek.

Love has to involve two people, and when somebody does not respond correctly to God's love, God is despised and spurned, therefore it is logical that God excludes that person from all the God has to offer.

We cannot identify “good preaching” if we do not understand the purpose and vocation of the preacher... The very words of God are to be explained such that the will of God is understood by repeating these words, explaining them, and insisting on them as our obligation. The lack of use of explicit (read aloud, exposit, and illustrate) Scripture makes for bad preaching...It is understood that the majority of people hearing a sermon do not want to be rebuked, but this is exactly what “good preaching” does.
